2006 GMC Sierra and Chevy Silverado
The GMC Sierra and the Chevy Silverado are designed to cost only $1500. more than their non-hybrid counterparts, and save 10 % on fuel without sacrificing any power. In order to accomplish this feat, the Sierra and Silverado feature a "flywheel alternator starter hybrid system," or FAS for short. This system which was first offered on a limited basis in 2004, allows the gasoline engine to turn off when you slow down or come to a stop in traffic, and the battery pack restarts the vehicle the second you step on the gas. The 2006 model year is the first to offer FAS in all 50 states. This system is proof that cars of the future do not have to burn fuel and pollute while stuck in a traffic jam. The other hybrid feature is "regenerative braking." This system recharges the battery pack when you are coasting down hill.

The Generator. The Sierra and Silverado also offer two convenient 120-volt, 20 amp, 3-prong power outlets under the rear seat and two more in the pick-up bed. These can be used to run power tools or a laptop computer. It is possible to put the truck in park and remove the keys from the ignition with the generator running. The truck is able to maintain power in this way for up to 32 hours. The system will shut off before the gas tank is drained in order to prevent the driver from becoming stranded. In effect you have here a 2,400 watt generator that is covered by the powertrain warrantee. It is much cleaner to run than any generator because it uses the truck's catalyst system.

Silverado or Sierra?
The only difference between the two trucks is badging and the shape of some sheet metal in front.
